Weather over the next 48 hours.

Changes For The Worse

After what has been a mainly settled spell of weather over the last few days, things are changing again as Atlantic low pressure begins to push in across the country. This trend will continue during the upcoming week, with many areas turning unsettled once more as we lose the influence of the high pressure that was responsible for the fine spell. The high is still exerting its influence across many areas today and will bring another dry and bright day for much of northern and eastern Britain. Meanwhile, the first signs of the change that is on the way can be found across southern and western areas where mainly cloudy skies are already bringing some showery outbreaks of rain this morning, particularly across southwest England and Wales. This rain is likely to spread a little further north and east during today, becoming more showery in nature, whilst these showers will also affect parts of Ireland for a time. By the time we get to this evening, a band of heavier and more persistent rain will be arriving across southwest Ireland, and it is this band of rain that will bring the return of the unsettled conditions over the next few days. Temperatures will again be close to normal everywhere, but with a freshening south-easterly breeze it will feel a bit cooler in places. It will be a dry, mild and breezy night for many central and eastern areas tonight, but that rain over southwest Ireland will move northeast to affect most of Ireland and southwest England along with western parts of Wales and Scotland by dawn on Monday. Some of the rain will be heavy at times, and will be accompanied by fresh to strong southeast winds. For Monday and that rain will become slow moving over Ireland, Wales and southwest England, and with some heavy bursts likely there is the potential for some large rainfall totals to develop. Further north and east will see another dry and bright day, but that rain in the southwest will move north and east to affect many areas by Tuesday with heavy showers following into the south and west.

Some Rain For The West

The weekend is starting off fine and bright across many areas but outbreaks of rain are already affecting parts of Ireland this morning and this rain will slowly edge eastwards into some other western areas today. High pressure over Scandinavia is going to try and prevent the frontal system bringing the rain from making too much eastwards progress over the weekend, but it does look likely that the unsettled conditions will win out during next week. So for today cloudy skies bringing some rain at times will affect many parts of Ireland and this rain will move far enough east to affect parts of southwest England and Wales by lunchtime, and perhaps reaching northwest England and western Scotland by this evening. The rain may be heavy this morning in places, but generally it will be on the light and patchy side. For everywhere else it will be a mostly dry day with spells of hazy sunshine, and brighter conditions will also move in across Ireland following the rain. Temperatures will be near normal for many, feeling warm in the sunshine, but cooler under the cloudier skies. Any remaining cloud and patchy rain will continue to erratically move east tonight, but much of England and Wales will probably stay mainly dry with most of any rain confined to Scotland. Later in the night, some further showery outbreaks will move into southwest England and these will affect south-western areas during tomorrow. For many though it will be another dry and bright day tomorrow although outbreaks of heavy rain and freshening winds will reach southwest Ireland by the evening.

Fine For Many This Weekend

A quiet weekend lies ahead as the area of high pressure that has given the fine conditions this week continues to dominate our weather. However, an Atlantic low pressure system will try to push into western areas, bringing some rain here and freshening winds to many areas by Sunday. For today it is set fair again with virtually all areas enjoying another fine day. There is some mist and low cloud around this morning, especially across central and eastern areas, but this should soon clear with sunny spells breaking through. The best of the sunshine today will again be towards western areas, although the far west of Ireland is likely to turn cloudier at times. Winds will be mostly light again and temperatures will peak at or just above the early September average. A fine night is expected again tonight with some mist and low cloud forming in places. Later in the night, thicker cloud will bring some outbreaks of rain across western parts of Ireland, and this will set the theme for the weekend. Much of Ireland will see a lot of cloud for most of the time, and this will bring some outbreaks of rain at times. Elsewhere, it will be a mostly dry weekend with sunny spells and variable amounts of cloud, whilst the winds will tend to pick up a bit from the southeast during Sunday - this heralds a change as we go into next week with unsettled conditions moving in from the southwest.

More Of The Same

Pressure remains high over Britain and Ireland today and therefore the settled theme continues with most places seeing a dry day with sunny spells. There is more in the way of cloud to be found over northern and some eastern areas as the light winds come in from off the North Sea, and this cloud may be thick enough to bring the odd light shower to eastern parts of England for a time this morning. The best of the sunshine this morning will be found across southern and western parts, and by the time we get through to this afternoon many of the cloudier areas will also brighten up with sunny spells breaking through. Temperatures will again end up close to or just above normal, and it will feel quite warm in the sunshine and with light winds. It stays dry tonight with some clear spells but cloud will tend to feed back into many eastern areas. It will end up another chilly night where the skies remain clear, but on the whole not quite as cold as previous nights have been. Friday then sees a virtual repeat performance with barely any change expected. Meanwhile, over in the United States, attention is focused on Major Hurricane Earl which is set to brush the east coast of America during the early hours of Friday. Hurricane warnings are already out for North Carolina and these warnings may well be extended as the Category 4 hurricane tracks northwards during the next 24 to 48 hours.

Staying Mostly Fine

Much of Britain and Ireland will see another fine and dry day as high pressure continues to maintain control of our weather. There will be one or two subtle changes, but on the whole today's weather will be very similar to yesterday's. After a chilly start then most places will see plenty of sunshine again today and with light winds temperatures will soon recover to near or just above normal values. Some patchy fair weather cloud will bubble up again in many parts, but it won't spoil the summer-like conditions. The exception will come across the far north and west where a very weak weather front caught up under the high pressure will bring much more in the way of cloud across much of Scotland and Ireland. It should still remain mostly dry however, with only a little light rain in the far northwest. It remains settled tonight with clear skies meaning those temperatures will drop away yet again and some mist patches will develop too. The cloud across the north and west will tend to spread to other northern and some eastern areas however, keeping temperatures a tad higher in these regions. Looking ahead to Thursday and Friday, and a slight east or north-easterly drift will mean cloudier skies will affect eastern areas of the country with the best of the sunshine likely to be over western areas.

Settled Spell

A welcome settled spell is now upon us with the next few days set to be mostly fine across just about all parts as high pressure centres itself over or close to the country. It is a chilly start out there again this morning, with a touch of ground frost in rural spots along with some patchy mist or fog around. This will soon clear and then for many it will be a dry day with plenty of pleasant late summer sunshine to enjoy. Temperatures will react well, with many places ending up around normal and it will feel warmer than recently with lighter winds, especially across south-eastern areas. Some cloud will bubble up by this afternoon, but most places will stay dry with the exception of the far north of Scotland where a few showers may come and go. Another dry and chilly night follows for most, but cloud across the far north and west will keep it a little milder here. Tomorrow will then see more of the same for many places, although there may be a little more cloud around over northern and western parts which could bring the odd shower.

Fine Bank Holiday!

High pressure building across Britain and Ireland today will bring a mostly fine day to all parts, although it is still rather windy with a few showers across the far southeast of England this morning. These winds and remaining showers will gradually die away and by this afternoon virtually everywhere will be dry with some sunny spells. Cloud will build up in those areas where the day has started with unbroken sunshine, but there shouldn't be enough spoil the day and some southern and western parts will continue to see some prolonged spells of sunshine this afternoon. After a chilly start - there was a touch of ground frost in several rural areas overnight - temperatures will pick up in the sunshine with many places ending up at or just below normal for the end of August. It will again feel particularly cool along the east coast with those winds only slowly easing. A dry night follows, and with light winds and clearing skies those temperatures will take another tumble, with a touch of ground frost again likely in some rural locations. There will still be areas of cloud drifting around though, and where this happens it won't be quite as chilly. Tuesday is then set to be another fine day with sunny spells and light winds as high pressure sits over the country. Cloud will build up again in places, but the cloudiest skies look set to be across the far north of Scotland where a little rain is possible at times. Very little change is then expected during Wednesday and Thursday with the settled theme giving pleasantly warm days but rather chilly nights, especially in the north.

Windy In East

An area of low pressure out over the North Sea is winding itself up today and will bring a breezy day to many parts with strong to gale force north or northwest winds developing across eastern coastal areas of England and Scotland. A band of cloud and showers will also move south across the country before drier and sunnier conditions develop across many central and western areas later today. The heaviest of the showers are likely to be across eastern Britain, where the risk of thunder cannot be ruled out either. By the time we get to this evening, most of the showers will become confined to eastern England with many parts seeing a fine end to the day. Temperatures in many parts will be on the cool side for late August, but in the sunshine it will feel pleasantly warm. It stays windy tonight across eastern England, and further showers will be blown in from off the North Sea, especially across eastern parts of Yorkshire, Lincolnshire, Norfolk, Suffolk and Kent. For the rest of Britain and Ireland a fine and cool night is expected and there could be a touch of frost in the rural glens of Scotland. Bank Holiday Monday starts off fine for most places with almost unbroken sunshine in many areas early on. It will still be rather breezy and showery across the far east and southeast, and we are expecting cloud to develop in many other areas during the day. Western areas will continue to see the best of the sunshine, and on the whole it will be a half-decent day for getting out and about. High pressure then looks set to take control of our weather this week, so there will be plenty of settled weather to enjoy. There will be variable amounts of cloud around, but plenty of sunny spells too and temperatures will respond well to this although the nights may be rather chilly.

Some Sunshine For Many

Given that it is a Bank Holiday weekend the weather is looking pretty good for much of the country, especially when compared to recent weeks. There won't be a heatwave, and not everywhere will stay dry, but for the most part there will be some sunny spells to enjoy between the scattering of showers that are expected. Winds are coming down from the northwest today and are already bringing a number of showers to northern and western areas, but for many other places it is a fine start to the weekend. The showers will become more widespread across many areas today, with some of them turning heavy for a time. Not everywhere will see a shower though, with many parts of southern and south-western England staying dry and bright, along with parts of Wales and much of Ireland. Temperatures won't be far from normal, and it will feel warm in the sunny spells. Showers will die back to northern and western coasts again tonight, with many inland areas becoming dry and clear. Temperatures will fall back again, with another cool night expected across northern areas in particular. For Sunday and low pressure to the east is going to send a weak weather front south across most parts. This will bring a band of cloud and showers with it across many areas during the day, whilst some brisk northerly winds will affect eastern areas. Drier and sunnier conditions will follow in across northern areas with the showers by then becoming confined to eastern coasts. By the time we get to Bank Holiday Monday, high pressure will be taking control so for most places it will be a fine day although brisk winds and a few showers will still be affecting the far southeast. It's a busy sporting weekend with the Test Match Cricket at Lords and Challenge Cup Final at Wembley today. The weather looks pretty good, although there is the risk of a shower by this afternoon. It's looking more unsettled over in Belgium for the Formula 1 Grand Prix at Spa, with a risk of showers for most of the weekend.

Drying Up In South

After a soggy few days, southern areas will see things drying up today as north or northeast winds help to blow the rain away to the south. This drier weather will be welcome to those areas that have seen two or three inches of rain falling this week. Rain across the south and southeast this morning will gradually slip away with many parts turning dry by lunchtime and somewhat brighter this afternoon. Meanwhile many other parts will see plenty of sunny spells again today, although a scattering of showers will break out across northern areas. A few of these showers could be on the sharp side but many places will manage to miss them and stay dry. It will be rather cool, especially across northern parts after a chilly start this morning, and a moderate north or northwest wind will keep it feeling fresh. A few showers will affect coastal areas tonight, but for many it will turn into a dry and chilly night with clear skies developing. This takes us into a reasonable start to the weekend for the most part, however showers around the coasts will tend to become somewhat more widespread for a time during the day across northern Britain with south-western areas probably seeing the best of the dry and bright conditions. More of the same is expected on Sunday, whilst Bank Holiday Monday looks set to be the best day of the weekend with many places seeing a dry day with sunny spells.

Best In North

Many parts of northern Britain and Ireland will see the best of the weather again today with plenty of sunny spells around and just a scattering of showers. Southern parts of England and Wales will again be cloudier with a risk of further rain at times as a slow-moving weather front continues to plague these parts. Most of central and northern England, North Wales, Ireland and Scotland will see sunny spells for most of the time, but a scattering of showers will break out once more. Most of the showers will be over Scotland, where they may be on the heavy side for a time. In the meantime, generally cloudy skies can be found across much of southern England and Wales this morning, and there are still some sporadic outbreaks of rain around. Most of the rain is on the light side, but the odd heavier burst cannot be ruled out over the Midlands and East Anglia. Not much changes through the day, although further bursts of heavier rain may affect areas close to the English Channel and rain may become more widespread again later this afternoon across southern England. Tonight sees more of the same with further rain affecting the south at times. Clearing skies elsewhere will allow some mist and fog patches to form as well as allowing temperatures to drop back into single figures. The last of the rain will slowly clear southern England tomorrow and then many places will see sunny spells with further showers across northern Britain. A quick look ahead towards the Bank Holiday weekend shows that winds are set to come down from a north-westerly direction, with sunny spells and showers dominating for much of the time.

Rain Into The South

Many parts of the country are starting off fine this morning but changes are afoot towards the southwest already as cloud streams in ahead of the next frontal system that will arrive across much of southern Britain during today. The area of low pressure that is set to bring this rain is a complex feature and has been giving us forecaster's something of a headache over the last couple of days when trying to determine what is going to happen with this system as it crosses the southern half of the country. It does still look like bringing a wet spell of weather with it, but to areas further south than we initially thought. So for today rain will spread in across much of central and southern England as well as into parts of Wales, the Midlands and later on East Anglia. The heaviest of the rain looks like being to the south of the M4 corridor and we have a Weather Watch out for this. Further north, across Northern Ireland, northern England and much of Scotland, it will be a bright day with sunny spells and a scattering of showers. Most of the showers will be on the light side, and many places will miss them and stay dry, so it will be a pretty decent day across northern areas. Temperatures everywhere will be near normal again, but rather cool under the persistent rain in the south. Further spells of rain affect southern counties tonight, although they will become lighter across the southwest by the end of the night. It will stay mild in the south under the cloudy skies, but where skies clear across central and northern Britain another rather cool night is likely. Tomorrow then sees a similar story with southern areas staying rather cloudy with a threat of further rain at times whilst central and northern areas see the driest and brightest weather with only a few showers in the far north.

Improving For A Time

Conditions across Britain and Ireland will slowly improve from the southwest as we go through today thanks to a ridge of high pressure pushing in. It is a generally fine start across many southern and eastern areas with skies having cleared overnight. There are a few showers across western areas of England and Wales, but most of the showery activity can be found across parts of Scotland, Northern Ireland and northwest England this morning, where some of the showers are heavy and persistent. It is also feeling fresher out there this morning, thanks to the brisk winds coming in from the west of northwest. The showers across northern areas will tend to gradually ease during the day, becoming fewer and further between, and by this evening many areas will become mainly dry. Temperatures will tend to be near normal for many today, but rather cool in the north, and they will drop back into single figures quite widely tonight as skies clear and winds ease in many parts. A few showers will continue, mainly around windward coasts in the north and east, but on the whole it will be a quiet night. Wednesday starts off fine for many, and stays fine across northern Britain, but it won't stay fine for long across southern and south-western areas as cloud and outbreaks of rain move in thanks to the next Atlantic low arriving. This is something we are watching closely as there is the potential for another very wet spell of weather to move across central and southern areas - please see our Weather Watch for more details.

Showers Continuing

It has been an exceptionally wet night across much of central and southern England and early reports suggest that some areas have seen over 2 inches of rain in the last 12 hours. This will cause some problems early this morning with localised flooding affecting some areas. The good news is that the system responsible for the heavy rain is now moving out into the North Sea, but it does mean parts of eastern and south-eastern England will see further heavy rain and strong winds for the next couple of hours. After this the day improves somewhat across most of England and Wales with some sunny spells developing but also a number of showers will be blown in on the moderate winds. Most of the showers today will be over northern England, Scotland and Ireland, where they will be heavy and persistent with a risk of thunder. Temperatures everywhere will be around normal for the time of year. Showers and brisk winds continue tonight, especially across northern and western areas with the south and east seeing the best of the dry and clear spells on offer. Tuesday will see showers affecting many areas, although the showers will ease by the end of the day as a ridge of high pressure begins to move in. This means Wednesday is set fair and is likely to be the best day of the week, but the next Atlantic low will bring rain and strong winds back by Wednesday night and Thursday so the unsettled theme continues. Don't forget you can send us your weather reports and pictures (via the links below) - we love to read and see your weather experiences!

Very Wet Tonight In South

Most of our attention today is on a developing area of low pressure that's currently centred to the southwest of Britain over the Atlantic. Over the next 24 hours or so this low is set to track north-eastwards across southern Britain bringing a spell of very wet weather to many southern and eastern areas of England, along with some strong winds for a time around southern and eastern coasts. Back to today first of all, and conditions are generally on the quiet side for many areas with a mainly dry day expected and there will be some good spells of sunshine around. There will be a few showers around across northern and western areas, as well as a continued risk of some beefy showers affecting English Channel coastal areas. Temperatures will be around normal for many, still quite warm in the south but not as humid as it has been over the last couple of days. Many places will start dry this evening, but outbreaks of heavy rain will already be moving into southwest England, and this rain will quickly spread northeast across much of central, southern and eastern England overnight. Some very heavy falls of rain are expected, and we have a Severe Weather Warning out for this - you can find out more details by clicking on the banner towards the top of the page. Meanwhile, much of eastern Scotland and northeast England will have a dry night, but spells of rain will move into Ireland and western Scotland along with freshening winds. This makes for a very unsettled start to the new working week with a lot of rain around. The rain across eastern England will soon clear away to leave many areas having a day of sunny spells and showers. The showers will be heavy and persistent at times, with hail and thunder, and longer spells of rain could give some very wet conditions across western Scotland and Northern Ireland. In addition to all this, it will become pretty windy in places too.

Weekend Of Contrasts

A real mixture of weather is expected this weekend with some areas seeing some fine and warm weather for a time, whilst others receive an absolute soaking. It was a very warm night across southeast England with temperatures not falling below 20C in some areas. Meanwhile, gale force winds affected northwest Scotland with some gusts in excess of 70mph being recorded! A frontal system is currently lying northeast to southwest across England and Wales, stretching from The Wash to the Bristol Channel. Areas close to this system will be mainly cloudy today, with showery bursts of rain becoming heavy and persistent at times. Parts of Wales in particular will see some very wet weather with over an inch of rain expected by the end of the day in a few spots. Ahead of the front, southeast England will be very warm and humid with bright spells again, whilst brighter and fresher conditions will affect northern England, Scotland and Ireland. There will be some showers in the north too, mainly around north-western coasts where it will still be quite windy. Rain will slowly cross most of southeast England tonight, lingering in the far southeast, and then many areas will see a dry night with clear spells and just a few showers continuing in the northwest. For Sunday, and further rain will affect southeast England at times. Elsewhere will see a bright day with scattered showers, most of these in the north and west, and it will feel fresher in the south. The unsettled theme then continues into next week with further rain or showers affecting many parts, although Wednesday may well be drier and brighter.

Wet In Places

A rather deep low centred close to Northern Ireland will bring a rather changeable day of weather for many areas, with some places seeing some very wet and breezy conditions whilst others end up very warm and humid. Outbreaks of rain, heavy at times, are affecting many northern and western areas this morning whilst southern and eastern parts of England are mainly dry if cloudy. The southeast will stay dry for much of daylight hours today, and will brighten up too. With warm air coming up from the southwest, temperatures will respond well with maximums of around 25C expected. It will be a little cooler the further north and west that you go, especially under the rain which is likely to affect western areas of England and Wales well into the afternoon. Meanwhile, it will turn drier and brighter over Ireland this morning, and these brighter conditions will spread to much of Scotland by this afternoon, but with strong winds developing. It stays windy across Scotland tonight, with showery rain affecting the far north and west. Elsewhere, clearing skies will follow a band of cloud and patchy rain slipping southeast across England and Wales, but the cloud and any leftover rain will tend to become slow-moving over central and southern England with more persistent rain moving in from the southwest later in the night. This will give a pretty wet day across parts of Wales and the southwest tomorrow with further spells of rain spreading northeast. It will be drier and brighter further north, although showers are likely. Not a lot changes on Sunday, although the rain in the south may have spread a little further east to affect southeast England so unfortunately our initial hopes of a dry and warm weekend here look to be disappearing.

Rain In Southwest Later

The changeable theme continues with many areas seeing a drier and brighter spell of weather today before rain moves in from the southwest later on. This rain will then affect many areas tonight and tomorrow as the area of low pressure responsible moves ever closer. This morning actually starts off fine and rather cool for many with clear skies overnight having allowed temperatures to drop back into single figures for many. There are a few scattered showers around, and these will continue for much of the day although many areas will miss them and stay dry with sunny spells for most of the day. However, southwest England and Wales won't stay dry today as outbreaks of rain move in during this afternoon. Some of this rain will be on the heavy side too, so it will be a wet end to the day in these regions. Temperatures everywhere will reach normal values, and it will be quite warm in the best of the sunshine. The rain extends to much of the rest of England, Wales and Ireland tonight, and there will continue to be some heavier outbreaks of rain in places. Scotland will remain dry, clear and cool overnight before starting fine tomorrow. However the cloud and some rain will spread further north during the day. Elsewhere it will be a rather cloudy day with further showery rain around, especially across western areas, whilst the southeast may turn brighter and very warm by the afternoon.

Showery Again

Westerly winds will bring a straight-forward mix of sunny spells and scattered showers across Britain and Ireland today. Almost anywhere could catch a shower or two, but most of the showers will be towards the north and west with south-eastern areas having the best chance of escaping with a dry day. Showers are already affecting western coastal areas this morning, and they will become more widespread by the time we get through to the afternoon. Some of the showers will be on the sharp side too, with a risk of a rumble of thunder and some localised downpours. Not everywhere will see the showers though, and there will be some decent sunny spells around which will help temperatures rise to near normal values for many. It will be rather cool across Shetland and Orkney however with rather cloudy skies and some rain at times for much of the day. Some rain will continue to affect the far northeast tonight, but for many places skies will clear as many of the showers die away and the night will end up on the fresh and cool side. Not a huge amount changes tomorrow with the far northeast remaining rather cloudy and damp, but for many it will be a dry day with plenty of sunny spells and just the odd shower. A change will arrive during the afternoon though as rain reaches the southwest and this will spread further north and east during Thursday night and Friday as the next low makes inroads.

Turning Brighter From The West

Low pressure is back in charge of our weather today with its associated fronts currently moving eastwards across all areas. The unsettled theme looks set to continue through to the end of the week too but there is some hope of warmer and drier conditions developing across the south and east by the weekend. Most places are starting off cloudy and damp this morning with outbreaks of rain and drizzle affecting many areas, the heaviest of which is mostly across northern parts. Drier and brighter conditions are now moving into Ireland, these will spread further east to reach many areas by this afternoon and evening. There will still be a few showers around though, mainly across western areas. Temperatures for most places will be close to normal, feeling pleasant in the sunny spells this afternoon. Many areas will see a dry night tonight with clear spells, but some heavy showers will move into Ireland and parts of western Scotland. Wednesday will see further sunny spells for most, but a good scattering of showers will break out, with the heaviest and most frequent of these likely to be towards the north and west. Thursday will see fewer showers but a spell of rain is then expected to move in from the southwest later in the day.

Fine For Many But Rain Incoming

The fine weather across many areas this morning is gradually being squeezed out of the way as an Atlantic weather system begins to move in from the west today, whilst low pressure over mainland Europe remains slow moving and brings cloud and a little rain to the far southeast. The European low is currently in the process of bringing around 4 inches of rain to parts of Holland and Belgium today, and this rain is just fringing the coasts of East Anglia and southeast England but will mainly be on the light side. With a brisk north/northwest wind blowing too, it will be quite cool under the cloud in these regions. It will be a warmer day for many other parts of the country, with sunny spells helping temperatures into the low to mid twenties for many. However, cloud is already streaming into Ireland and western Scotland as that Atlantic low edges closer, and outbreaks of rain will move in here by this afternoon, some of it on the heavy side. This rain will continue to move eastwards tonight, reaching most central areas by Tuesday morning, before finally moving across eastern England during the day tomorrow. Brighter conditions with showers will follow into western areas, and this then sets the theme for the midweek period.

Dry For Most

For much of Britain and Ireland it will be a dry day today with sunny spells developing as high pressure tries to take control. However, weather systems are trying to attack us from both the east and the west, with the system out to the west ultimately set to win the battle over the next couple of days. Therefore the message is that we advise you to make the most of the improved conditions! Some rain has been flirting with the English Channel coasts of Kent, Sussex and Hampshire this morning, but this is now moving away to the south. All areas will then see a mostly dry day with sunny spells breaking through, although there will be some large areas of cloud drifting in across eastern areas from off the North Sea thanks to a north/north-easterly breeze. The odd light shower may break out in one or two spots, but you will be unlucky if you catch one of them. Temperatures will be a touch warmer today, especially across western areas in the best of the sunshine and with lighter winds. Many areas will remain fine and dry tonight, but a large and complex low over mainland Europe will try and send some rain into parts of East Anglia and Kent late in the night, along with some brisk northerly winds too. It looks like the heavy and persistent rain associated with this system will stay offshore, with only light and patchy outbreaks affecting the coasts of Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex and Kent late tonight and into Monday. For many though, the new working week will start off on a fine and dry note although it will be cloudier towards eastern areas. Most places will then see another fine and rather warm day, but it will stay rather cool and cloudy in the east. Later in the day, rain will reach western Scotland and Ireland as the Atlantic weather system heads in, and this rain will spread to most parts by Tuesday, with the unsettled theme then continuing through much of the week.

Showery South

With pressure slowly rising from the north today, most of the showers and longer spells of rain will gradually become confined to southern areas. By the time we get to tomorrow, many areas will see a drier and brighter day before the unsettled conditions return next week. For much of Ireland and Scotland it will be another mostly dry day with some sunny spells and variable amounts of cloud, and the odd light shower cannot be ruled out. Much of northern England will also tend to become mainly dry this afternoon as the morning showers ease away. Meanwhile, for the rest of England along with Wales it is set to be another unsettled day with showers or longer spells of rain developing. Some of the showers will again be heavy with hail and thunder, particularly across southern and western areas of these regions this afternoon with eastern parts turning drier and brighter as the north-easterly breeze picks up. Temperatures will be around or just below normal for mid-August once again, so nothing to get excited about. A cool night will follow tonight with the showers in the south slowly clearing away/ A dry night with some clear spells will then follow for many, however, some mist and low cloud will form by the morning, especially across north-western areas where the winds will be light. This takes us into the better day of the weekend, Sunday, with a ridge of high pressure bringing a mainly dry day with sunny spells to many parts, although there will be variable amounts of cloud drifting around. This weekend marks the beginning of the new Premier League football season with matches across England and Scotland. You can check the forecast for many football grounds via our Sports Venues link below. Alternatively, just enter the postcode in the location bar towards the top of this page!

Further Heavy Showers

Another day of heavy showers is expected across much of central and eastern Britain thanks to low pressure continuing to sit over the North Sea close to eastern England. Once again today the best of the drier and brighter weather will be found towards western areas, but it will be rather cool with a brisk northerly wind picking up in many areas. Heavy showers are already affecting many parts of northern and eastern England from the Wash northwards and there are already some pretty intense downpours around. Indeed, rainfall totals are building up in some places with all these showers, and there is a risk of localised flooding in a few spots where the showers become persistent today. The showers will become more widespread across much of England again as we head through the day with the potential for hail, thunder and torrential downpours at times. There will be some brighter spells around though, mainly towards southwest England, with the best of today's dry and bright weather to be found across Wales, Ireland and parts of Scotland. With low pressure remaining close by tonight the showers and longer spells of rain will continue for much of the night across central and eastern areas. Northern and western areas will see another mainly dry and cool night and will then again be mainly dry with some sunny spells again tomorrow. Further showery bursts of rain can be expected across much of England and Wales during Saturday, but conditions should improve in many of these areas as well by Sunday. However, the improvement may well be short-lived towards the east as heavy rain looks set to move in from the east during Sunday night into Monday although confidence is currently low on this.

North Sea Low

Low pressure is today sitting over the North Sea and will bring a number of showers to many central and eastern areas along with rather cool north or north-westerly winds. Western Britain will see the driest and brightest conditions thanks to being closest to high pressure that's centred to the west/southwest of Ireland. Many places are starting dry this morning, but showers are already affecting coastal areas exposed to the northwest breeze and these will become more widespread by this afternoon across much of central and eastern Britain. Some of the showers will be heavy at times, with some local downpours, but as always some areas will miss out and stay mainly dry. Many western areas will stay dry with only isolated showers around this morning which will mainly die out by the afternoon. With winds from that northerly quarter temperatures will be on the cool side for mid-August, although it will feel quite warm in any sunny spells. Many places will then see a dry and cool night, but that low in the North Sea hasn't finished with us yet and will send more showery outbreaks of rain into parts of Scotland and northern England, and again some of these could be on the heavy side. This sets us up for a very showery day tomorrow across much of England, with some heavy and thundery downpours expected, and even some longer spells of rain across eastern areas. Northern and western Britain will be drier and brighter, and these brighter conditions will slowly spread somewhat further south and east over the weekend.
